Heaven?s gates opened to receive Velma Blanche Johnston, 95, of San Antonio, on April 1, 2022. She was born in San Antonio on December 2, 1926, to Edwin Warfield Grimes and Julia (Coleman) Grimes. Velma was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, James Johnston, her parents, 4 sisters and 1 brother. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Wiatrek (Kenneth), Susan Massey, 3 granddaughters, and 10 great grandchildren.
Velma graduated from Fox Tech High School at 16. She loved reading. Her spelling was impeccable partly due to her 27-year career as secretary to the Staff Judge Advocate at Lackland. Velma faithfully attended Mayfield Park Baptist Church for most of her life. Velma was a kind, gracious and generous person. She cherished her family and looked forward to their visits. Her home was quite decorated with family photographs.
The family wishes to thank Velma?s neighbor, Michelle Mora, and the caregivers at Brookdale Hollywood Park Assisted Living for the loving care given to her.
Visitation will begin on Monday, May 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with a Funeral Service to be celebrated at 11:15 a.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
