Suspect in slayings of Westland teens convicted in 2012 of killing military veteran

Detroit ? The second suspect in the brutal murders of two Westland teens two years ago was arraigned Thursday.

Felando Hunter, 23, already serving a life sentence for murder in Jackson State Prison, was arraigned Thursday via video in 36th District Court.

Hunter and suspect Fredrick K. Young, 25, of Detroit, face charges of first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree felony murder, torture, armed robbery, unlawful imprisonment and felony firearm in the slayings of Jacob Kudla, 18, and Jourdan Bobbish, 17, two years ago.

Young faces an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm

The teens? bodies were found July 27, 2012 in a field near City Airport about a week after they had gone missing after visiting their uncle who lives on the city?s eastside. They were last seen about a week earlier.

About two weeks later, both Hunter and Young were arrested in connection with fatal shooting of a 60-year-old Marine and Navy veteran John Villneff who was shot to death defending his grandchildren during a home invasion involving Hunter, Young and several other men at the family?s home in the 6800 block of Rutland on the city?s west side on August 9, 2012.

Hunter was sentenced to life in prison in Villneff?s murder. Young is awaiting trial, along with two other defendants, in the Villneff case next month.

Investigators allege Young and Hunter robbed, tortured, imprisoned and then murdered Kudla and Bobbish. The motive for the murders has not been released but more details in the teens? murders and the case are expected to be released when Hunter and Young have their preliminary examination on the charges to determine whether they will stand trial on the charges on May 13.

The bodies of Kudla and Bobbish were found in a field at Lyford and French near City Airport on July 27, 2012, around 9 a.m. following a week-long search of the city for the teens. Their family members believed they were carjacked after leaving the east side home of an uncle.

The victims were stripped to their underwear, forced to kneel, and shot execution-style in an overgrown, litter-strewn field near Coleman A. Young Airport. A man scavenging for old furniture to sell made the gruesome discovery of the teens? bodies.

The arrests and charges follow an extensive investigation by Detroit police and the Wayne County Prosecutor?s Office.
