| 1401 | William Nelson Benson Jr., age 48, of Sykesville, passed away suddenly on Friday, September 4, 2020. Born November 23, 1971, in Baltimore, MD he was the son of William Nelson Benson, Sr. and Mary M. Milesky Benson of Sykesville. Bill had worked as a property manager for several years. He was a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School, Baltimore. Bill was an avid Ravens, Orioles and Maryland Terps Basketball fan. Surviving in addition to his parents are son Noah William Benson of Sykesville; daughters Miranda Julia Benson and Haley Nicole Benson both of Sykesville and sister, Angela Michelle Maith. | 1402 | WILLIAM5 McDONALD (Louis4, Valentin3, Edward2, Thomas1), son of Louis and Henriette (Poirier) McDonald, was born at D'Escousse, 18 Dec. 1843 [PR] and died at sea probably about 1886, but after 16 Feb. 1885 when he served as witness to his brother Tranquille's marriage. He married at D'Escousse, 19 Jan. 1874 [VR] his second cousin, S?RAPHINE McDONALD, who was born 13 July 1851 [1901 CR] and died at D'Escousse, 6 March 1939 [VR], daughter of D?sir? and Louise (Poirier) McDonald. She married second at D'Escousse, 15 Aug. 1897 [PR] D?sir? Landry, born 26 Dec. 1842, son of Basile and Judith (Marchand) Landry, and widower of Marie Boudrot. William was a seaman at the time of his marriage. He later was a fisherman on board Pascal Poirier's five-master. He broke his leg, gangrene set in, he died and was buried at sea. He was listed as age 34, a seaman, in the 1881 census. S?raphine and her two sisters were all said to be over six feet tall. In the 1891 census she was widowed, living with her two sons, and was listed as a day laborer at housework. She made several visits to Massachusetts, living for a time with her nephew Louis McDonald, son of Tranquille McDonald and with her son Leonard in 1920 on Putnam Street in Somerville, Mass. Her grandchildren in Massachusetts do not remember her speaking English, but the 1901 census indicates that she spoke both French and English. She lived at Poulamond after her second marriage, and in later years lived with her nephew Arthur Joyce, son of her sister Louise. A great-grandson, Edward L. Galvin, is in possession of a large photograph of William showing him to be a large man with a walrus moustache. | 1403 | Winnifred Clarise Burke August 26, 1936 - March 8, 2026 It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Winnifred Clarise Burke which occurred at St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, on the morning of March 8th 2026, surrounded by family. Winnie was born in French Cove on August 26th, 1936 to the late Joseph and Alma (Richard) Sampson. She was predeceased by her best friend and soulmate of 64 years, Ignatius. She is survived by her children Tom (Monique), Pamela (Rob), Pearl (Floyd) and Cyrus (Patricia), all of French Cove. Grandsons Duncan George (Miranda), Lower L'Ardoise, Gregory, Glasgow Scotland, Patrick (Meghan), Hamilton, Ont. Thomas, and Simon, Beamsville, Ont. She is also survived by brother Linus (Vi) St. Peter's. Along with many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Cedric (Yvonne), sisters Matilda (Leonard) and Gladys (Francis), Granddaughter-in-law Melissa Carter, whom she affectionately referred to as her "first granddaughter". Married in February 1958 she and Dad moved north to Schefferville Que. After a few years, they decided to move back to Cape Breton, where together they raised their family. Mom's greatest joy was being a fulltime devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed her hobbies of knitting and puzzles, but her greatest love was baking. Supplying the neighbors with fresh baked goods and making sure the "goodie drawer" was always full, for everyone to enjoy. The kettle was always on when family and friends dropped in. After raising her family, she enjoyed her time working with the Ladies Auxiliary and catering with her sister Gladys for local events within the community. She especially enjoyed the years her and Dad spent together after his retirement in 1995. Whether playing cards, making puzzles, Sunday drives, or spending many evenings with friends playing music, as long as they were together. Mom was incredibly grateful to have all her children move back home. Surrounding her with love and being there for her no matter what she needed. Having her children with her also meant regular Sunday suppers with mom, which she thoroughly cherished. She will be missed by all, especially her family, as she reunites with Dad. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of the Emergency, Progressive Care and especially the Palliative Care units of Saint Martha's Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. at River Bourgeois Visitation Parlour, River Bourgeois. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday March 19, 2026 at 11am from St. Peter's Parish, St. Peter's; Rev. John Yake officiating. | 1405 | Zachary Scott Liddell September 4th, 1984-September 14th, 2017 For those of you who were lucky enough to know him, you know that to know Zach you just had to read his words. Both on the page and, the simplest reminder of the man he lived to be, tattooed on his arm. "To Live, To Learn, To Love" "Stop, Breath, Focus" Many of you knew that he lived fully, and loved deeply, but many of you didn't get the chance to know that he was also an aspiring philosopher. His most recent reflection on his 33rd Birthday: "Today was a good day. Getting older changes the perspective on what you plan in life. I've traveled, seen, done, and gone. But the best thing in life is being wanted, needed, loved. All I can do is try. I wish I knew what I know now when I was young. P.S. I can die happy to have seen Bob Dylan." This should make you smile because you know Zach's close relationship with music. Music drove him, and guided him through his every emotion, to clarity and peace. He had a way with words and a way with people. He could charm just about anyone with his smile and quick wit, and had the great gift of being able to calm you down from even the most tortured moment with just a few supportive and uplifting words. He brought peace of mind in times of stress and gave the warmest hugs. Among his greatest gifts were his never-ending generosity, and loyalty to those that he loved. And his greatest joys were making people laugh, and sharing Chef Zach's tasty recipes. His guacamole was unbeatable. He had a deep connection to the natural world. Whether fishing, camping, canoeing, or just starting the fire, he was always "all in." So strong and determined, Zach lived life on the edge, literally - testing the limits bungee-jumping, skating around the world, skydiving (twice), and taking the biggest step of his life asking Chelsey to be his wife. He was a phoenix, living top-speed to the fullest, sometimes crashing, but always rising from the ashes. He loved reflecting and reminiscing about his childhood adventures with his brother and sisters, was a wonderful son, loving brother, father, and best friend to all. We will miss his fierce hugs, big smile, and forever remember him sprinting forward through life to his next great adventure - free and happy.
